Gus Johnson Community Center
The Gus Johnson Community Center, a proud member of the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce, is situated in the heart of West Akron and is designed to benefit the entire community at large. Named in honor of former NBA great Gus Johnson, the center commemorates a native son who was shaped by this community and its educational system. Gus Johnson was also a devoted member of our adjoining church, United Baptist Church Ministries, and remained deeply committed to uplifting inner-city youth.
Operated by the Gus Johnson Community Foundation, Inc., the center serves as a welcoming and inclusive hub for community engagement, education, and outreach. Its mission is to foster a viable foundation for instruction, support, and patronage for individuals across the lifespan—from toddlers to seniors. Through a wide range of services, including tutoring, youth development, health, and wellness programming, the Gus Johnson Community Center continues Johnson's legacy of service by empowering residents and strengthening the Akron community.
Located in the heart of West Akron off I-77, the center is conveniently on one of the city's main Metro bus lines. We have a working relationship with caterers, florists, disc-jockeys and photographers.
